Sophia Antipolis - INRAE PACA - A010

Edouard Evangelisti from the IPO team will be presenting his seminar as part of the ISA scientific event to be held this Friday, October 4 at 11:00 am in room A010:

Abstract :

"Oomycetes are filamentous microbes that resemble fungi, yet they are more distantly related to fungi than animals are to plants. These often-overlooked organisms have had a profound impact on human history. One species caused a devastating famine in 19th-century Ireland and continues to damage today's crops. Two other species now pose a serious threat to the global cacao supply. The threat from these pathogens is growing: new species are being discovered, tropical oomycetes are expanding into temperate regions, and some are developing resistance to the few available treatments. Oomycetes are becoming a significant challenge to sustainable ecosystem management, pesticide reduction, and global food security. While research has traditionally focused on infection tools and plant defence mechanisms, a critical gap remains: understanding how oomycete infections are regulated over time and space. This gap limits our ability to develop the next generation of resistant crops. In this talk, I will highlight five key questions that need to be addressed to deepen our understanding of these detrimental pathogens and prevent devastating outbreaks."
