"Studies on RNAi in Euschistus heros and evaluation of dsRNA side effects on Melipona quadrifasciata "

Abstract :

"The growing demand for food poses a significant challenge to agriculture, with soybeans being a key crop—Brazil and the United States produce two-thirds of the global total. Among pests affecting this crop, Euschistus heros is the most significant in the Neotropics due to its direct and indirect damage, significantly reducing yields. Its control relies on pesticides, negatively impacting native bees like Melipona quadrifasciata, crucial for pollination. This study aimed to develop double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) targeting the V-ATPase gene to control E. heros via RNA interference (RNAi). Results showed high mortality following dsRNA microinjection, though ecological and biochemical barriers limited oral RNAi effectiveness. Concurrently, effects on M. quadrifasciata were assessed, showing RNAi sensitivity and a slight decrease in gene expression, highlighting the need to evaluate risks for the safe use of this technology."
